We will highlight the sustainability standards and frameworks used, as well as discuss practical examples of companies that are taking a proactive approach to verifying and monitoring sustainability KPIs. Eric Hespenheide serves as the Global Leader of the Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu (DTT) member firms’ Sustainability & Climate Change group within Audit and Enterprise Risk Services, as well as the Leader of Global Business Risk, which includes sustainability as well as internal audit.  He represents DTT in various forums such as the Liaison Delegate to the World Business Council for Sustainable Development and the Organizational Stakeholder for the Global Reporting Initiative.  He is a frequent speaker on the topic of sustainability, particularly related to reporting and assurance matters.  Eric is a CPA, and has served numerous global companies during his 33 year career.

 

Mike Wallace is the Director of Sustainability Reporting Framework for The Global Reporting Institute (GRI).  He has almost twenty years of experience advising corporations, governments, and non-governmental organizations in their efforts to develop sustainability initiatives.  He has worked with both local and global organizations on the development and implementation of sustainability programs and has authored numerous articles on sustainability, corporate social responsibility and corporate environmental performance in legal, professional and topical publications.  Over the course of his career, he has worked with corporate clients including UTC, Home Depot, Colgate-Palmolive and Genentech; non-profit clients ICLEI, Global Footprint Network and Corporate Ethics International and government agencies ranging from Environment Australia, the States of New South Wales, Victoria and Western Australia, the US EPA, the State of California and the US Army, Navy & Marines. Mike’s multifaceted, global expertise enables him to integrate an exceptional understanding of environmental, social and governance issues with the strategic and operational needs of his clients.  Mike is responsible for the GRI’s Sustainability Reporting Framework (SuRF), which represents the principal vehicle for the pursuit of the GRI’s mission.  He is a member of GRI’s Senior Management Team and represents the GRI externally to various institutions with regards to the application and development of the GRI Sustainability Reporting Framework specifically, and the development of sustainability reporting in general.

 

Eric and Mike will be joined by Vincent Moolenaar, Senior Vice President of Internal Audit at Royal Ahold NV (Ahold).  Ahold is engaged in the operation of retail food stores in the United States and Europe through subsidiaries and joint ventures, and operated over 2,900 stores as of the fiscal year ending January 3, 2010.  Vincent is responsible for all internal audit activities across Royal Ahold, with over 40 staff located in both the United States and the Netherlands.  He has extensive prior experience with Shell International, including a Programme Manager of the global CO2 Programme, as well as Vice President of Internal Audit for the Downstream, Trading, and Global Functions.
