The next generation of Internal Audit departments will rely heavily on data analytics and automation to successfully manage the increased demands placed on it by its various stakeholders.  Capital One’s internal audit group has been able to reduce audit hours while expanding its coverage of risks, using data analytical technology to audit retail bank branches. They are in the process of building similar programs in other segments of the business such as information technology, operations, and compliance to expand coverage and reduce hours further.

Bill and Michele will walk you through the steps Capital One followed to construct auditing programs robust enough to replace on-site visits, including the process, technical hurdles and change management challenges encountered; while successfully expanding the audit coverage and frequency of reporting.

Bill Chippendale is Vice President, Professional Practices and Technology Solutions Groups for Capital One Audit and Security.  The Audit Technology Solutions team provides data analytics, continuous monitoring, and automated testing support to all Capital One audit teams.  Bill is an experienced internal audit professional who, prior to joining Capital One last year, provided business advisory services to numerous companies in the financial services and other industries as a Senior Manager at Ernst & Young. Bill is also a Certified Internal Auditor and Certified Public Accountant and a frequent speaker at IIA and other professional conferences.

Michele Lascarides is an Audit Director and manages the Retail and Deposit Operations Audit team at Capital One Bank.   Michele is an internal audit professional with experience in retail banking and operations, credit card, and consumer lending.  Michele has an MBA in Finance from Saint John's Unversity and a BS in Accounting from Long Island University.  She is also a Certified Internal Auditor and a Certified Bank Auditor.  Michele serves as an instructor for internal audit training within Capital One.
