The International Standards for the Professional Practice of Internal Auditing charge the Chief Audit Executive (CAE) with ensuring that the internal audit activity adds value to the organization.  The Profession is engaged in shifting the perception of the internal audit activity away from a compliance, process, or SOX only function. The emerging and desired perception of the internal audit activity increasingly includes partnering with management to identify risks and evaluate controls across the COSO rings or categories, embracing the change agent/catalyst role to enable transformative results, and enhancing overall corporate governance.

“To add value” requires the CAE to conceptualize and articulate how internal audit’s value will be measured.  In this webinar, you will see an approach to creating a value proposition that is holistic in that it is grounded to both COSO frameworks (Internal Control and Enterprise Risk Management (ERM)) and plays to a broad base of stakeholders, including shareholders, regulators, and rating agencies.  Following this webinar, you should be better equipped to:

  • Define what “adding value” means, explore alternatives for creating a value proposition based on the definition, and determine options for communicating it to stakeholders.
  • Identify measures that demonstrate value-add, which will resonate with stakeholders.
  • Outline the relevance of emerging themes or perceptions of the internal audit activity in the context of your value proposition.

Jason Ackerman is Georgetown University’s Chief Audit Executive with responsibility for providing independent assurance and consulting services covering strategy, operations, reporting, and compliance. He has fifteen years of experience gained in management consulting firms, international non-governmental organizations, and in higher education. That experience includes working and living in the Americas, Eastern Europe, Asia, and Africa, and serving clients from a variety of different industries.

Barry Mumford is the Director of Auditing at USEC Inc., a global energy company headquartered in Bethesda, MD.  A CPA and CMA, he has over 30 years experience in the fields of auditing and finance.  Through Barry’s leadership, this start-up function received the IIA’s Commitment to Quality Improvement Award in 2000 for professional excellence, quality of service, and professional outreach.  Since then, two Quality Assurance Reviews (QARs) acknowledged several leading practices and strengths, including Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) thought-leadership, migration of Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX) compliance responsibilities to management, and the use of ‘deficiency language’ beyond SOX across the COSO rings or categories. Prior to joining USEC, Barry held both audit and finance positions at York International Corporation following the spin-off of the company from Borg Warner Corporation.  He began his career in public accounting at KPMG.

Raina Rose Tagle, CPA, CISA, is a Partner with Baker Tilly.  With staff totaling more than 1,350, Baker Tilly provides a wide range of accounting, tax, assurance, and consulting services.  Ranked as the 13th largest firm in the United States, Baker Tilly serves clients nationwide from offices in Chicago, Detroit, Minneapolis, New York, Washington, D.C., and throughout Wisconsin.  Raina leads Baker Tilly's risk advisory and internal audit services, as well as the higher education and research institutions industry practice, providing services in the areas of internal audit, financial and operational risk management, construction audit, fraud investigation, technology risk consulting, and organizational governance.  She serves the higher education, not-for-profit, government contracting, real estate, health care, and professional services industries.  Raina started her career with a global accounting and consulting firm, progressing to serve as a manager in the Audit and Technology Risk Consulting practices.
